This election, let's ask our leaders to protect  Canada's oceans

Did YOU know …. .

... Canada's government is actively opposing a proposed UN moratorium on deep sea trawling – in spite of the fact that 78% of Canadians support the ban, which would protect deep sea corals, fishes, and other ocean creatures?

... Newfoundland and Labrador's cod population, a fish that once supported thousands of jobs in Atlantic Canada, is currently at 1% of its 1960 abundance?

...seismic testing (the use of intense noise to explore for oil and gas) is occurring in sensitive ecological areas such as the waters off of Cape Breton in spite of known serious and negative impacts on snow crab, the basis for an important Atlantic fishery?

... less than 200 Atlantic salmon return to rivers in the inner Bay of Fundy (between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) down from 40,000 returning salmon 40 years ago – a decline of 99.5% ?

... oil and gas development is not permitted on the eastern seaboard of the US, but our Canadian and Nova Scotia governments gave out leases for approximately 8 million hectares of ocean for oil and gas development off of Nova Scotia with ZERO consideration for impacts on the environment and fisheries?

...in spite of dire findings of drastic declines of fish in Canadian waters, Canada continues to cut funding important scientific initiatives to improve our understanding of our ocean ecosystems?

And did you know… that during this federal election, you can help our oceans by asking election candidates what they will do to improve Canada’s record for protecting fish & fisheries?
